Toponymy: 'Zurrieq' is derived from the Maltese word for blue, 'zonqor' or 'izraq', referring to the blue sea at Wied iz-Zurrieq. Alternatively it is derived from 'Zerniq' (dawn) since Zurrieq overlooks the east and receives the first rays of rising sun.
