| Windows NT users must
manually configure the NT connection software, Remote
Access, to connect to the Internet. If you are on a TCP/IP-based Local
Area Network (LAN), consult with your LAN Administrator
before completing the setup. You may lose network
connectivity while connected to the Internet.
- Select the Control
Panel from the Settings portion of the
Start Menu.
- Double-click on the Network
icon in the Control Panel, then select the Services
tab at the top of the Network window.
- In the list of
Network Services, you will need to have both Remote
Access Services and Simple
TCP/IP Services installed.
- If either or both of
these services are not installed you will need to
install them at this time. Click Add
and select the
Service that you do not have from the Select
Network Service list. When installing
Remote Access Services, Windows NT will try to
automatically detect your Ethernet card. If
Windows NT cannot detect what type of Ethernet
card you have, or you do not have an Ethernet
card, you will be prompted to select one from the
Network Adapter list. If you do
not have an Ethernet card, you should select MS
Loopback Adapter from the list. Windows
NT may also try to auto-detect your modem if you
have not previously installed one. Click Continue
to allow Windows NT to do so.
- Once you have
verified that you have both Remote Access
Services and Simple TCP/IP
Services installed, click on the tab
labeled Protocols. Verify that you have the TCP/IP
Protocol installed. If you do not have
this installed you will need to install it by
clicking Add and selecting it
from the list. You may be prompted for your
original Windows NT floppy disks or CD-ROM during
this portion of the setup.
- When you have
verified that Remote Access Services,
Simple TCP/IP Services, and TCP/IP
Protocol are all installed, click on the
OK button in the Network Window.
Windows NT will then tell you that you need to
restart your computer. Press Yes
to let your computer restart and come back into
Windows NT.
- When Windows NT comes
back up, double-click on the My Computer
icon on the desktop. Double-click the Dial-Up
Networking icon in the My Computer
window.
- If you have never
been in Dial-Up Networking, a Phonebook Wizard
will start to guide you through the setup. If you
already have Phonebook entries, press New
to create an Entry for Global Net. If, when you
click New, the wizard does not
start, press Cancel. Click More
and select User Preferences....
On the Appearance tab put a
check next to Use wizard to create new
phonebook entries.
- In the Wizard, type Global
Net in the box labeled Name the
new phonebook entry. Do not check the
box labeled I know all about phonebook
entries... at the bottom; if you do, the
wizard will abort. Then click on Next.
- For Check all
that apply, check the top 2 entries: I
am calling the Internet and Send
my plain text password if that's the only way to
connect. Do NOT check the third box.
Click on Next.
- Type in your local
Global Net access phone number. If you need to
dial any extra numbers (such as 9, to access an
outside line, or *70, to disable call waiting),
you must set up those in the Telephony Control
Panel. If you have anything set up in the
Telephony Control Panel, you must check the Use
Telephony dialing properties box for
them to take effect, otherwise leave it
unchecked. Click on Next.
- You are finished with
the Wizard. Click on Finish.
- You should now be
back in the Dial-Up Networking window with Global
Net listed as the phonebook entry to
dial. Click More and select Edit
entry and modem properties...
- Select the Server
tab. Under Dial-Up Server you
should have PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95
Plus, Internet. Under Network
Protocols verify that only TCP/IP
is selected. At the bottom verify that both Enable
software compression and Enable
PPP LCP extensions are selected. Click TCP/IP
Settings
- At the top, Server
assigned IP address should be selected.
In the middle manually select Specify
name server addresses. The four boxes
below it should become available. Enter the
following:
Primary DNS : 194.105.32.2
Secondary DNS : 194.105.32.3
Leave the Primary WINS and Secondary WINS both
set to 0.0.0.0
- Verify that both Use
IP header compression and Use
default gateway on remote network are
checked. Click OK to return to
the Server tab. Click OK again
to return to the Dial-Up Networking window.
- Now that you have
created the entry, click on More
and select Create shortcut to entry....
In the Create Dial-Up Shortcut
window, the Look in box should
read Desktop. If it does not,
click the down arrow at the right end of the box
and select it from the list. Click on OK.
This will place an icon called Global Net
on your desktop. Close the Dial-Up Networking
window.
- Now you are ready to
dial. Double-click on the Global Net
icon on your desktop.
- Type your Global Net
password in the box labeled Password.
For security reasons, it will show up as a line
of asterisks. Remember that Global Net's password
system is case sensitive. Make sure that your
CAPS LOCK key is not on. Leave the third box, Domain
completely blank. You may, if you choose, put a
check mark in the Save Password box. This will
save you from having to type in your password
every time you wish to connect with your Global
Net account. This will also make it possible for
ANYONE with access to your computer to use your
Global Net account, so do NOT check this box
unless you trust EVERYBODY with physical access
to your computer to not use your account.
- Click OK
to dial.
- Once you are
connected, you may minimize the status window and
open any of your Internet applications, such as
Microsoft Internet Explorer. Do NOT close the
Dial-Up Networking window, or you will be
disconnected from Global Net. To log off of
Global Net, click the Disconnect
button.
- In the future, all
you will need to do to connect is double-click on
the Global Net icon on your desktop and click on OK.
Depending upon whether you have the Save
Password box checked, you may need to
type in your password.
